Everett and Jones BBQ, jack london square in Oakland. BBQ chicken, pork ribs, beef brisket, links, cornbread, Mac&cheese, potato salad, baked beans, collard greens for TWO people! Lol
Hot date (with myself) at Mandalay Burmese restaurant on California/6th. This is my go to spot for authentic Burmese, it’s so much better than burma superstar, less wait, and just a block away. Was maddd craving their texturally satisfying tea leaf salad: burmese tea leaves, fried lentils, peanuts, sesame, garlic, cherry tomatoe, jalapeno, lemon juice. Simply perfect.
I made my way to the Fatted Calf charcuterie in Hayes Valley this morning for the first time. What a great neighborhood butcher shop to purchase in-house sausages, pates, and cured salumi. It’s a bit pricy, but I’m sure it makes up in quality. I picked up some pork fennel sausage links for dinner. Excited to try them out!
Just picked up 2 pounds of chinese sausage from my favorite cured meats store in Chinatown on washington and stockton. My grandpa used to bring back 10 lbs at a time in his suitcase for the family when he would visit us in LA.
Banana split at Fair Oaks Pharmacy & Soda Fountain with my sister! They use thrifty’s ice cream! Memories!
ROADTRIP: I drove up to Point Reyes and stopped by Marshall for a sack of 50 oysters and 2 pounds of mussels to bring back home for dinner with some friends. I couldn’t resist shucking a few on the ocean front before hitting the road back to SF. Thank god I remembered my shucker, Tabasco, and Tartine bread!
We also randomly stumbled upon Clover farms and engaged in a one-on-one conversation with the owner about the history of their farm and dairy cows. He definitely put into perspective the importance of quality and awareness of the food we put into our bodies. With beautiful weather and good company, I had a memorable roadtrip away from the city! Today was a good day! =)
SAIGON: a roast pork banh mi from my favorite spot: Saigon Sandwich on Larkin and Eddy. You can’t beat a $3 sammie with fresh cilantro, sliced jalapenos, and pickled carrots!
WAFFLE SUNDAY: Marin farmer’s market on a Sunday morning! They’re very measurable to the ones I had in Belgium. They’re made of leavened dough rather than batter. Waffles are the best way to start the day!
COPYCAT: It’s a nice treat to call arizmendi in advance to reserved a ball of pizza dough then you can make your own pizza at home with a pizza stone, some cornmeal to dust, and 550F degrees of heat!
Spicy sausage, Sun dried tomato, wild shiitake and king trumpet mushrooms, onion, garlic, bellwether fromage blanc, micro watercress, spanish olive oil, arizmendi cornmeal pizza crust
FERMENTATION: the start of last season’s batch of kimchee: napa cabbage, fish sauce, gochugaru chili powder, onion, pear, garlic, ginger, daikon radish, sugar, sea salt, empty costco size pickle jar.
It’s almost gone. Time to make a new batch!
MORE PICKLES: I had bought some beautiful baby golden beets from the farmer’s market back in November and pickled them in equal parts rice vinegar and sugar, and aromatics. They’re great with your sunday bloody mary or on a simple market salad with goat cheese and pistachios.
PICKLES: I pickled spicy nante carrots a while back with ginger, habanero chili pepper, garlic, black peppercorns, rice vinegar, sugar, salt. Tartine’s pickled carrots were my inspiration.
INSPIRED: I’ve read through the detailed and meticulous 50+ page process on how to replicate Chad Robertson’s Country Loaf in your very own home. I’m determined to cultivate my own starter in an amateur’s attempt to make fresh bread and pizza dough! Pictures of my baking adventures soon to follow…
